Overview

Shoren-in is an 800-year-old temple (est. 1150) located next to Chion-in and near Yasaka Park in the Higashiyama district of eastern Kyoto. It's known as a monzeki temple, which is a category of temples where the head priests are members of the imperial family.

One of the most impressive aspects of the temple is the carefully designed garden, featuring moss landscapes, a bamboo grove, and a viewpoint overlooking the temple grounds. Another lovely feature is the beautiful tearoom where visitors can enjoy traditional matcha while admiring the view.

The entrance to Shoren-in features an impressive 800-year-old camphor tree that was planted at the same time the temple was established. The temple buildings feature both traditional and modern artwork on a number of the fusuma sliding doors.

Shoren-in also holds illumination events during spring and autumn, however, at this time they have been cancelled until further notice. Shoren-in is one of the best-kept secrets in Kyoto, but currently the main hall is undergoing renovation works and won't be completed until sometime in 2025. However, the temple is still open and worth a visit for those looking to escape the crowds.
