2. Customer Reviews
We know how important real customer reviews are, so we've selected 3 well-written reviews that have been left on Google. I've made some minor corrections to spelling and grammar to improve the flow and readability.
Review Highlights:
"Hoshinoya Kyoto is far the best hotel/resort experience I've had in Asia in the past 10 years. From check in, to the boat transit to rooms, to dining and lodging, everything was perfect! The resort met all my expectations and more. Will certainly be back! I liked this place so much, I extended on the spot"
"The Hoshinoya Kyoto is a unique and truly memorable hotel. The hotel is located in a gorgeous setting that was particularly lovely in late May. The hotel staff could not be more welcoming and kind. We were celebrating a special birthday and the staff went beyond our expectations to give us an exquisite dinner and a remarkable Japanese breakfast. The view from our rooms was mesmerizing and the Western style bed was extremely comfortable. There was a cedar bathtub as well as a shower. A wonderful and relaxing experience. We loved staying here."
Location is perfect, food is perfect, and service outstanding. Yes, it's expensive, but worth it. I disagree with other reviews which are concerned about the cost, it's Japan, not Mexico. The place is completely unique, located in a remote part of Kyoto near the Bamboo forest. Check is 3PM and check out 12:00. No TV and no children younger than 13. This is a place to relax. The food served during the 9 course dinner is an artistic experience.
3. The Location
Hoshinoya is set within Kyoto's picturesque Arashiyama area, known for its stunning natural landscape, historical temples, and vibrant seasonal beauty. This secluded retreat is only accessible via a 15-minute boat ride from the Togetsu Bridge, which is a ten-minute walk from the station. There's a strong connection to nature throughout the year as the scenery changes dramatically with each passing season. Despite being close to the often crowded bamboo grove, Hoshinoya feels worlds away, providing you with a private oasis of calm and tranquillity. Arashiyama's iconic attractions are just a short journey away, making this an ideal location for travellers who seek a combination of luxury, convenience, and cultural immersion.
4. The Design
The design of Hoshinoya Kyoto is a charming blend of traditional Japanese aesthetics and modern luxury, carefully curated by acclaimed architect Rie Azuma. The interiors are a testament to fine Japanese craftsmanship, including elements such as bamboo furniture, handmade karakami wallpaper, and washi paper lanterns that help you feel connected to the local artisans. The whole property has a harmonious connection with nature. The combination of traditional elements with more modern amenities like air conditioning, stone-top bathrooms, and heated floors, creates a unique atmosphere.
5. Dining
Dining at Hoshinoya Kyoto is an experience in itself, with a focus on kaiseki-ryori (traditional multi-course Japanese haute cuisine) that celebrates the season's finest ingredients. Under the guidance of Executive Chef Toshiharu Takahashi, you'll be treated to a culinary journey blending the flavours of Kyoto’s local produce with refined cooking techniques. Seasonal ingredients are selected at their peak and each dish is presented with great attention to detail, inspired by the surrounding scenery.
6. The Expressive Seasons
One of the most captivating aspects of Hoshinoya is its ability to showcase Japan's changing seasons in their full glory. Each season offers a distinct and magical experience. In spring, cherry blossoms (sakura) surround the ryokan, painting the landscape in delicate white and pink hues. As summer arrives, lush greenery changes the property, providing a cooling canopy and an atmosphere of vitality. Then in autumn, vibrant colours transform the forest into a movie-like paradise, making it one of the most popular times to visit. And finally, light snow falls on the mountains during winter, offering a tranquil atmosphere to soak in the wooden cypress bathtubs.
7. Rooms & Unique Features
The 25 rooms at Hoshinoya Kyoto are divided into four distinct pavilion types, each with its own unique characteristics and charm. Every room offers stunning views of the Oi River and the surrounding mountains. The interiors come with custom furnishings, such as handcrafted bamboo sofas, tatami flooring, delicate karakami wallpaper, and lanterns made by the renowned Miura Shomei. The inclusion of wooden cypress bathtubs is perfect for unwinding after a busy day. Additional thoughtful touches, such as bamboo cups, handcrafted tea sets, and matcha-whisking kits, make your stay feel personalized and luxurious.
